Following the recent trend of luxury pre-fabricated structures like Muji’s recent three huts, Robbie Antonio’s “Revolution Pre-Crafted” is a collection of pre-fabricated pavilions by 30 top designers and architects, including Zaha Hadid, Sou Fujimoto, Daniel Libeskind and Gluckman Tang. Some have already been built, being exhibited at Design Miami, while others are planned for the future.
With recent advancements in building technology, Revolution Pre-Crafted hopes to democratize the design of pre-fab structures, offering a line of products that incorporate the distinct spatial and social brands of the designers. See a selection of the Revolution Precraft line after the break.
David Salle + Aldo Andreoli Studio (AA Studio) – The Billboard House
“Our idea was to make a house and studio complex for an artist (myself) and his family that can be easily installed on a site in the West Texas high desert. The views are relatively un-obstructed, and the house is designed to bring as much of the view inside as possible. The structure is intended to support a life both active and contemplative: reading, writing, painting, outdoor activities, socializing all have designated area.”
Bamboo Installation
“For the Bamboo installation, we wanted to focus on a simple structure with a basic shape. We chose to use bamboo in its pure and natural form because it's a lightweight material and very present in Brazilian culture. The Bamboo installation is a piece of furniture that is portable, sensitive and flexible.”
Sou Fujimoto – Infinity Ring
“An investigation into the ergonomics of seating in both private and public environments, the Infinity Ring takes the preconception of predefined spaces and their rituals and wraps it around a ring, creating a continuous strip of inhabitable spaces. The entire ring is then rotated, thereby generating infinite configurations of space-between-space, creating endless ways to sit, climb, lie down or crawl on, resulting in spatial configurations that are much richer than the sum of its parts.”
Sou Fujimoto – Sphere Greenhouse
“The sphere greenhouse intends to reinvestigate our relationship with plants by transporting the user into an intimate world where only the user and his/her plants exist. To that end, the pavilion as a sphere built from circles invokes the idea of having a cosmos in your garden. The space within the sphere is flexible in that seats and pots can be arranged to one’s liking. In that sense, the user shares the same container that the plants inhabit. Seats become pots for plants, pots become seats for people.”
Gluckman Tang – Model Art Pavilion
“Model Art Pavilion designed by Richard Gluckman and GT is a proposal for a movable object to display contemporary art for diverse situations. The modular art pavilion is a light structure that mediates the relationship between its site, the participant and the art object.”
Marcel Wanders - Eden
“Venturing beyond expected notions of the prefabricated house, Eden by Marcel Wanders is a luxurious place to stay, clear of the bustling city centre; the perfect getaway. In the heart of nature in tropical South East Asia, it becomes a peaceful sanctuary to grow treasured memories with one another. Open and unfenced, the generous use of glass and a roof that extends over the exterior connect the inside and outside spaces to create twice the living area for special private and social gatherings.”
Daniel Libeskind – Recreation Pavilion
Marmol Radziner – Instrumental Home (Interiors by Lenny Kravitz)
The Instrumental Home is a free standing enclosure that includes a Living area, Kitchen, one Bedroom and one Bathroom. The interior space maintains a constant connection with the outdoors by the use of full height glazing. The Kitchen and Living area open up to large exterior decks, facilitating a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.
Kulapat Yantrasast – Eros
Ron Arad – Armadillo Tea Canopy
“In its basic configuration, the Pavilion comprises 5 moulded shells, each made of repeatable, modular components which are mechanically-fixed together with exposed fixings and stiffening brackets. The modularity of components provides freedom to configure the tea canopy to suit a number of arrangements, which can be expanded when using additional shells. Be it an informal garden enclosure, playroom, pavilion or place of reflection, the canopy is designed to be structurally independent, and can be installed as a free-standing element, with the possibility of additional anchoring where desired (e.g. outdoor use).”
Michael Maltzan – Bettina Pavilion
Tom Dixon – BLOCK
“Taking inspiration from science fiction to Polynesian architecture, BLOCK explores adaptable ways of living, working or playing in which any site can be built upon and multiple shelter configurations are created using a simple kit of parts to form a cohesive whole. The dwelling is conceived more as an industrial product than an attempt at architecture - constructed from industrial aluminium extrusion structure with panel infill, a tough metallic exterior belies a soft interior finished entirely in cork.”
Selgas Cano and Helloeverything – casa A
Zaha Hadid – VOLU Dining Pavilion
"Defined by sophisticated digital processes, the structure has been developed in such a way that its components are, at most, singly curved. Innovations including planar forming were computer programmed to integrate fabrication constraints into the design while enabling engineering feedback in an iterative delivery process. This allows for comprehensive design development of complex and expressive form through the bending of flat sheet materials – a relatively simple process which produces very little material waste."
